In fact, a hangover is a complex chemical reaction that develops in response to the presence of ethanol in the human body. It is the transformations of substances that provoke the development of symptoms known to many. To find out exactly how a hangover appears, you need to study what happens with alcohol in the organs and tissues of a person.
An alcohol-containing drink initially enters the cavity of the stomach, but does not stay there for a long time, as it has a liquid consistency. It passes through all parts of the intestine and reaches its final fragments responsible for the absorption of water. It is from there that ethanol penetrates the bloodstream, and then spreads throughout the body, including the brain, which provokes the state of intoxication.
After that, ethyl alcohol inevitably undergoes chemical transformations. At the initial stage, acetaldehyde is formed from ethanol. This substance is toxic to body tissues, which ensures the development of alcohol intoxication – a hangover. The compound has a slight sweetish aftertaste, which is why people suffering after taking large doses of alcohol often have bad breath.
Acetaldehyde is not the only substance that negatively affects the functioning of organ systems after drinking alcohol. This reagent undergoes oxidation in the tissues, which leads to the formation of another toxic compound – acetic acid. A person will suffer from a hangover until these substances leave the body.
The presence of these substances in the bloodstream changes the course of metabolic processes in the tissues. A feature of the hangover condition is that the metabolism slows down due to the lack of basic enzymes that are spent on the conversion of ethanol to acetaldehyde and acetic acid. As a result, the synthesis of simple sugars in the process of gluconeogenesis practically ceases. Lack of glucose is another reason why a person suffers from weakness, fatigue and feels overwhelmed.
The listed symptoms are far from the only factors that cause discomfort to a person with a hangover. Experts explain that changing metabolic processes leads to the fact that the kidneys begin to form urine several times more intensively. As a result, the body loses a lot of fluid, which provokes a strong desire to drink. However, even drinking plenty of water does not bring relief. This is due to the fact that in fact there is enough fluid in the body. The problem is its incorrect distribution. So, the bloodstream suffers from a lack of moisture, while tissues are exposed to its excess, which externally manifests itself as strong edema.
Doctors warn that the danger in terms of intoxication is not so much ethanol itself and its decay products, but rather additional substances that play the role of flavoring additives. So, the symptoms of a hangover will be much more pronounced if the following were present in the alcoholic drink:

Experts have also identified a correlation with the age of a person taking alcohol. In young healthy people, all metabolic processes proceed quickly, which ensures timely disposal of toxic substances. The older the person, the slower the chemical transformations, so headaches, a feeling of dehydration and weakness disturb for a long time.
